Students with Disabilities

I have several students with ADHD and most have a very difficult time staying in their seat while I demonstrate various art techniques. One particular student has a special place on the floor where he can do his artwork. He is less disruptive when he can work in his space. Most of the other students are allowed to stand while they create their artwork. They will sit for short demonstrations and then stand if they need to. I use a lot of visual examples and the help of peers to review missed information to these students. |

I frequently use the Breaking down of tasks and Chaining in my art room. This strategy allows my students the opportunity to practice and self-monitor their success. The students complete the task and feel a sense of accomplishment and then move on to the the next step for completing or adding to their art project. I had a student who was visually impaired and needed to use larger print when I gave instructions for an art project. The iPad was ideal for him because I could enlarge the step by step instructions and he would be able to follow them with no problems. The student was not able to distinguish between certain colors. He used the iPad to help with see color gradients which helped him decide what colors to use for his projects. |

Assessment of Learning

I have used Exit Tickets to assess student understanding of the art elements or concept being taught. This is a great way for me to see what I need to review or modify when planning for future lessons. Since the art elements are used continuously throughout the year it is important for me to assess students regularly. Portfolios and sketchbooks are another way I assess my students progress and understanding of various artistic techniques. |
