Students with Disabilities

I had a student that had impaired vision. I teach recorder music using a projection screen. She had no success even moving as close to the screen as possible. I noticed her in the library one day reading a book. She held the book as close to her eyes as possible. I talked to her about the story she was reading and realized her brilliance. I knew then I just needed to print out every piece of music that we were working on or was going to work on and give her a music folder to take home and to bring to class. She quickly became one of my best musicians.

I use keynote presentation to display and teach the recorder method to my students. I wrote the method book and accompaniment for each exercise and full length songs so every bit of theory and every note learned is at a perfect pace with lots of supplemental material for solidification. We learn cooperatively but have many opportunities for small groups and peer learning. I allow some of my students that need explicit direction to use my presentation at the computer with guided help. I also put the presentation on a flash drive so they can practice at home. The music accompaniment has a demo version that allows the student to hear the proper way to play the music. It also has the accompaniment version that allows them to perform on their own.

Assessment of Learning

I usually assess my students by having them play in small groups of three or four so it allows me to get a good assessment without the time consuming one on one way. One of the ways I accommodate my students with learning disabilities when assessing their progress is to allow them to play with the group first then have those that are having trouble mastering the concept or technique to play for me independently. Sometimes I modify the music so that they can be successful.
