Students with Disabilities

My school last year had self-contained ASD classes. At first they were a challenge for me, especially the kindergarten class. I had 2 non-verbal students and 2 who did not like sound. I started doing more music-therapy type things, such as playing soft music and having them do movements with scarfs. I printed off and used tons of visuals with scarfs, stuffed animals, rhythm sticks etc. They also loved learning xylophones and keyboards. I printed off letter cards for those as well as color coded things.

One strategy that I could begin implementing is self analysis. Especially at the end of class having students assess themselves and how they feel they did in class. This could cover behaviors, what they don't feel confident about, what they do feel confident about etc.
I do a lot of small group instruction in my classroom, and I also break things up-even songs- into smaller chunks when students are first being introduced to the new song/concept. I sing a line, students sing it back. I sing the second line, students sing it back. I then sing the lines together and student sing them back again.
Being a second year teacher, I have not had many experiences with disabilities. So I do not have a good example of how I have use technology to help a student in my classroom.

I am a second year teacher this year, so I have not had many experiences teaching students with disabilities. However, my last school did have self-contained ASD classes. I adapted my instruction to small group and well as my testing strategies. I did have 2 IA's that came and helped me for each class. For district testing especially, the IA's and I worked one on one with each student, reading the questions/answers and having them point to the answer.
