Students with Disabilities

  • Think of a student with a disability you have now or in the past. Describe ways in which their disability affected their learning in your class. I have a student who is hard of hearing. She does well with her accommodations, however, it has effected her academically and socially. Sometimes when she is looking down, she misses out on information in the classroom. This can effect her performance if the teacher, me, misses out with communication on objectives or requirements for an assignment. It is important for me as the teacher to make sure she has the information she needs. Otherwise, she can miss steps, miss learning, miss objectives that affect her overall grade. She also has difficulties socializing because her speech is slightly blurred and sometimes it make it difficult for her to communicate with her peers. I am certain to place her with students in collaborative learning who are sensitive and positively responsive to her impairment. This allows her to be successful in the classroom. : )

I have a student who is hearing impaired. This has effected her both academically and socially. In the classroom, I watch to make sure she is attentive and if not, I work one-on-one with her to check for understanding. I am careful to place her in groups with student who are sensitive to her needs when it comes to collaborating in the classroom. Just these small accommodations make enough difference to allow her to be successful in the class.

Tools and Strategies

Two strategies I use in the class room are cooperative learning and self-evaluation/reflection. Cooperative learning allows for interaction, perspectives from others, discussions, and peer teaching. Students with disabilities can really benefit from this because they can receive help from and learn from peers while practicing social skills. The self evaluation and reflection is essential to student growth. It causes them to think about what they have done; the planning, the process, and the result. Students analyze their works and discover what they like or dislike, make suggestions on how to improve it, and reflect upon how they can use what they've learned in the real world. Both strategies can be very powerful tools in the classroom.

When working with student whom have various disabilities, I find it important to individualize their learning experiences. I find that using portfolios and sketchbook assignments with writing assignments help me to determine student achievement and progress in art. Sketchbooks are an ongoing process which shows growth. It allows students to critique, review, and evaluate their own personal goals as well as show individual gains. Students can share and talk about their progress with me as well as with their peers. Sketchbooks are perfect personal tools for evaluating student progress and growth. It allows for differentiation and individuality based upon the students individual needs.
