When my ASD students come, I usually have them work with clay. They respond much better to the tactile stimulation it provides rather than just coloring on paper.

A few students in my ASD classes had a really tough time sitting still for any length of time. They were always running around the room. I was able to obtain a gamer rocking chair, wobble stools and wobble cushions and the extra movement/stimulation allows them to focus on doing the activity. Even the aids and teachers noted how much it helped their focus and hope to get some for their own classroom as well smile

I have a student with autism that absolutely loves sharks/ sea life/ dragons. So, whatever project we are doing, I find a way to let him incorporate that into the art work. It's a special part of his rubric. "Does artwork include a shark or dragon"
It keeps him focused and happy
