Students With Disabilities

I had a student last year that was visually impaired and would get off task and loose interest in the assigned projects easily. I sat the student in front of the room next to the white board but found that they would still have trouble remembering the directions or reading the steps left on the board. So I would print out in large font the steps for the day or project and would laminate them and leave them on the table. I found that the other students at the table benefited from the step by step instructions and it eliminated a lot or headaches with repeating instructions all class period. I now use them for all classes at all my tables!

Graphic organizers and cooperative learning are two strategies that I could implement more in my room to help students with learning disabilities. I currently have a list of the steps for throwing on the wheel laminated and hung up in front of the potters wheels. I think that making them larger and adding visual pictures with each step will help students remember all of the steps and what they look like if I am not readily available to help one on one. Cooperative learning is the second method that could help students in my classroom. I can have students paired in groups of two or three to research an artist or technique and answer questions about the assignment. They would all be responsible for making separate projects but would be able to help each other throughout the process.

The past few years I have had a group of students with autism attend art class with two of my art classrooms. The group came with several assistants due to the many levels and severity of autism. There were several accommodations that I would provide for them to be successful in my class. For each project I would have examples of the finished project and an example of what we were accomplishing that day. I would have a list of step that they were to try to achieve that class period. If they were not able to finish, extended time was given. I had a whole set of specialized tools that the students would use to make their projects including: specialized scissors, large triangular crayons so they were easier to grip and not roll off the table, and glue sticks with a triangular base instead of liquid glue.
