Students with Disabilities

I have three students in my classroom with a type of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (Autism). I met with a student's mother to discuss strategies to prevent outbursts in class. We decided to allow the student to leave the class when he was feeling upset or outraged at either a mistake he made or someone next to him. This is my second year with this student and I can already tell his social skills are improving due to being in band and making friends and the need to leave the classroom is becoming much less frequent. I think setting routine and having class procedures also really help these students (and ALL the rest of your kids) understand and feel comfortable in your classroom. |

I have a few students who suffered with anxiety and would not be able to perform their playing test for the class. I have started giving everyone in my class the opportunity to record their assignment using Google Drive to complete the assignment or come in during lunch to play them off. Many students who don't suffer with this problem still enjoy recording their assignments so the pressure is off. |

Tools and Strategies

I use Peer Partners (section leaders) to help other students during and after school. They teach sectionals to all kids in their section and can work with a student who may be too shy to ask me for help initially. This works very well during solo and ensemble time with freshmen students of varying ability levels. I also use task analysis when I teach sight-reading. We start off my identifying key and time signatures and determining the form of the piece. We sizzle and finger through the excerpt and we address accidentals and tricky patterns/passages. Once we have completed those steps, we play through the piece. After performing it, I call on students to discuss issues and problems they heard while playing. That's also reflecting both on the ensemble and on themselves which is another strategy used in my classroom. |
