A student with a traumatic brain injury was a joy to have but required many modifications. He was significantly behind in technical and reading skills. I found volunteer tutors from the community to come in to work with him regularly. He did better in a small group environment as opposed to the large ensemble, so a peer tutor was also helpful. We chose a selection of solos that he could listen to recordings of and practice with confidence and created alternate assessments.

I especially appreciate mnemonic instruction and peer partners / instruction. Mnemonic devices can help focus the entire group, when dealing with a difficult concept, to relate it to a simple big idea. Peer instruction can be very helpful for both students. The student receiving instruction has obvious benefit, and the student delivering instruction can be one who has a desire to lead and possibly someday teach.

A student who was missing fingers in both hands required modified instruction, rehearsal devices, and rubrics for technical lessons and assessments. I had this student for several years and it became simply part of the routine when creating lessons and rubrics.
