I just recently changed positions from a ESE K-2 self contained classroom teacher to art. Most recently in class I had a student with a primary exceptionality of Emotional/Behavioral Disabilty. I met with his teacher and counselor to discuss interventions and accomodations and modifications that were in the students IEP. I implemented the strategies the student needed in order to help manage his behavior. I provided a cool down space and modeled correct behavior and responses during our lessons. Lessons were broken down into smaller chunks and the student was provided with several options for tools and subject in order to fit his needs and keep him engaged. If the student became violent or overly aggressive and did not utilize the provided strategies and areas for "cool down", the rest of the students would be moved away to another area in the room and adminstration was called to remove the student. The student also had a point sheet that traveled with him to my class, points were earned towards a reward. The point sheet is completed and monitored. I also attended IEP meetings to discuss and provide input for the teacher and parents. |

Tools And Strategies

One of the strategies I would like to implement is the task analysis, I find that I forget to breakdown assignments into very simple steps for my exceptional students. I now realize that walking through each step in my brain will help me break it down for those that struggle with multi step projects. I would also include picture cues to help with visualizing the process. Another strategy I want to use is a graphic organizer, especially a Venn Diagram for comparing and contrasting artworks. I think this will broaden the understanding of the elements of art to my students. The students will be able to look at the art in smaller chunks and organize their thoughts on each piece.
I would like to implement more use of technology in my classroom through the use of a mimio smartboard and iPads. This would allow students with language or speech disorders to complete tasks without the stress of communicating with others. It will also enhance the learning of students with visual impairments by allowing them to view things presented in a close up way. |

Assessment of Learning

I have several students that recieve occupational therapy. I work with the therapists to find tools that would assist the students in the art room. I provide these tools for all assignments and assessments. The students are allowed to select the media that best suits their needs and the adapted tools to complete the assignments or assessments. I also provide pictures or artworks for the students to point the the answers of questions they are being assessed on, that way the pressure to create art with the concept being assessed is reduced and I can assess the understanding of the concept. |
