I had a student who is on the Austin Spectrum and was diagnosed with this during the year I had him. I worked very closely with his mom who I met with often and we worked together to give him the best education. His disability affected his education and social interaction, he was not able to keep friends for long periods of time because he didn't want to share, do what they wanted, etc. He wanted to talk about cars and play cars. This was a struggle when trying to find a partner or work with partners in class. He also had a hard time staying on task and paying attention for long periods of time. He also really struggled with being able to write out his answers. I allowed him to type his answers and gave his chances to verbally explain. I also sat him near me and other students who were always willing to help. |

When I was teaching 2nd graders I had one student who was under going evaluations and tests for what turned out to be Aspergers. But while I had him, he really struggled with being able to write a written response to a question, so I would have him go to the computer; where he had a separate folder ready and knew exactly how to open Word and everything and type his response for me. He would then save it (it was linked to my network) and I would check it later or right then. |

With my students I have had with ODD, Aspergers, Emotional disorders, and LD; I often allow them to draw pictures and label what they can. Then I will later ask them to describe what they drew and I will record that. Or another thing I will do is work with the students independently for a brief moment and assess them orally and one on one with me. |
