Students with Disabilities

I had a student with behavioral/emotional disabilities who could lose his temper quickly when things weren't going well. I set up an action plan with students who sat or marched near him to help diffuse the situation before it got out of control, and often checked up with him and encouraged him to look for the positives before getting caught up in negativity. He ended up being a great leader in the group.

I have used grouping practices in a variety of classes over the years. In guitar classes I have used large groups to go over new material, then broken down to smaller groups to practice together, and worked with students one on one to isolate trouble areas and clarify any misconceptions. I have also used graphic organizers in ensembles to find similarities or differences in a program. We might look for similar styles, articulations, tempi in a venn diagram, or make note cards citing trouble passages that need work and lay out steps to improve them

I had a student who needed a great deal more time and quiet to play their part of a duet for beginning guitar. I allowed the student to work in a practice room on their own during class practice time and come play their test with me as the duet partner in order to ease their stress and allow for a higher chance of success.
