1. Describe how two of the strategies discussed could potentially be implemented in your classroom. Be sure to identify the two strategies by name, and describe how they could be used to address the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

I am especially fond of visual, tactile and motor instructional strategies in the artroom to increase learning and facilitate content comprehension. Chaining is always helpful with the younger learners. Making a clay pot or rolling a coil should be broken down into sequential tasks. Identifying each step and demonstrating it to the class, or having a visual made showing the steps is very helpful to ALL students. Peer partners help build confidence at this time also with a challenged learner. This is also where mnemonic instruction can be used as well. Using keywords that were already taught such as roll, pinch, smooth or score the clay will keep even the most challenged learner on task.

In my art classroom I use Nearpods to introduce lessons or to group students to work cooperatively to complete the lesson. The students love using this technology and it gives me the opportunity to circulate around and monitor students learning. The students are each given a task within the group a so all students are actively learning at their level.

I use technology every day in my art class. I use an overhead projector and microphone. I also use Canvas to create lessons for our virtual days. In one class, I use a special microphone that connects to a student's hearing aids. This helps him become more successful at following directions.

The two strategies that could potentially be implemented in my classroom are task cards and cubing. Task cards would allow students to have more freedom in how they go about learning the unit content. Cubing would give students the ability to explore the subject matter in different ways which would give them a better understanding of the unit content.

I have used adaptive technology programs such as I-Ready which provides personalized learning instruction based on students' individual learning needs. This program is beneficial for all students as instruction is differentiated based on ability. My instruction also includes video lessons to enable students to go back and review at their own pace as needed.

The two strategies that I could implement in my classroom right away would be task cards and cubing. I already use a form of task cards for each studio that students can work in, but I currently call them menus. I would make this more specific and give 3-4 differentiated options within the menus. The same could work for cubing. However, I would make one method focused on a specific assignment, and one focused on personal exploration.

I have used technology in the form of I-pads for students who cannot grasp, or follow along teacher directed instructions. They use as a resource to
to view and review the lesson instructions and watch video of the process. They are able to work at their own pace and view/rewind as many times as needed. They can also look at alternative process, strategies, technique and possible materials. When a student uses an I-pad I always supervise
at key intervals.

I have used technology in the art room with my student who has cerebral palsy and very poor motor skills. She used her ipad in regular classrooms for many things including speech to text. She was able to use apps such as SketchBook and Crayola Create and Play in the art room. Other technology we use is a smart board type touch screen TV. it has a white board app where you can draw, paint and cut and paste with your finger. This student as well as many others have enjoyed using this tool.

All my students including students with ADD ADHD OI OHI etc have school iPads they are allowed to bring them to art on any given day to use as a tool but I will specifically send a message to teachers for all students to bring when they will be using it as part of their assignment. I use a powerpoint every class with pictures, words, vocabulary, ideas and I can statements for all students to use as needed.

I use chaining often for example to learn about texture, we feel real things, create rubbings, draw texture on pre-drawn items, then incorporate implied texture in a project.
I am a slo a big fan of mapping/graphic organizers. Using a word web for example with kinder they choose a color they write in the center and draw things that is that color. the elements of art, facts about an artist, the steps for an assignement...

In my classroom, I have used technology regularly to help students with ADHD. We use the smartboard to show artwork as it is being created. We also use the smartboard as an overhead to see the completed project. I show short art tutorial videos on artists or artwork that can be created. I use chaining to break down the tasks at hand through slideshows of step by step tasks to complete the assignment. New subject matter can be introduced easily by discussing background knowledge and then presented short biographies on the artist we are studying.

I think peer partners and technology could be helpful for art students with disabilities. Peer partners can keep students with disabilities on task while providing them the additional support from their peer's understanding of the material. Technology such as the SmartBoard can make it easier for students with Visual Impairment or Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students to see and hear the demonstrations/presentations.

I use technology in the art room to record myself doing the modeled draw prior to teaching the lesson.. Then I use a slowed down version of the playback speed and am able to show the video of the modeled draw while I walk around the room and assist students. Students also ask for me to pause the video- which helps them be successful because they can start over, erase, adjust their drawing, or have me assist. They feel more in control of the drawing because they have multiple opportunities to practice or start over. It helps clarify the expectations and instructions. This helps many varying exceptionalities including those who have EBD, ADHD, SLD, and SP/L and OT needs.

I used battery operated scissors (technology) with a student with limited mobility in order to allow him to participate with his peers in a visual art lesson that necessitated cutting with scissors. I have also used low tech options like tearing to achieve the same result.

The two methods i used was the graphic organizers to keep the student on task and the other was using group practices. By putting the child in a group, you use the social motivation to motivate the student to work. The graphic organizer provides them with small attainable goals and working in groups makes the assignment more student friendly by providing a social aspect to learning.

I work with many disabled children on a daily basis. Their disabilities vary widely and many of the students' disabilities overlap. Our team has used blocks to lift a desk for a boy that needed extra leg room. We have used velcro to secure writing tablets to desks for our students who have issues with their writing tablets slipping and sliding around. We have used pool noodles to soften the edges on various pieces of furniture for our beautiful students. We use smart boards to communicate and do lessons with those students who are able. We supply our ADHD mentally impaired students with various "landing spots" which allows them to occasionally move about the room but within some sort of structure.

Two of the strategies that could be used in my classroom are the task cards and the reflection strategy.
I really like the idea of having my students do a self evaluation after a project in art. After a hands on application of an art project for example a painting of a landscape learning about one point perspective. I would give students a self-evaluation to reflect and critique their work. I could ask them which parts of the project were challenging for the,? Where do they think the needed more assistance? Can they give suggestions on how they can receive the help? This allows them to also evaluate me as their teacher. I can see what areas I need to work on. I really like the idea of the task cards with tiered instructions. I could have each table with a different task card and have 15 minute stations. I could place my students with similar skill levels at the same table to work on the tasks at hand. For example if I were to do a project on color. Tier one could be identify the primary colors and secondary colors in the images and circle them. Tier two could have them fill in the blank of the primary secondary and complementary. Explaining them and how each color is made. Tier three would be to apply the primary colors only to their drawing. Tier four could be use only primary colors to mix all the other colors to make your own landscape. Tier five could be use the the primary colors to paint but make painting with one of the complementary color sequences to create contrast in their work.

One way I have used technology in the classroom is by recording myself demonstrating how to do the projects. The students can see my hands and have a step by step process of how to do the project. They have the ability to pause or replay the instructions as many times as they want.

One strategy I use is technology. I like to use videos that explain the steps of an art assignment. Then the students can revisit it to get helpful reminders of how to do things. I also use Ipads for a lot of my ESE classes. They really enjoy using Art for Kids hub where they are taught how to draw specific images. The guy uses the chaining method to break down each step of the object they are drawing. It simplifies it and students with very basic drawing skills are able to draw objects that are more difficult.

  • Describe how two of the strategies discussed could potentially be implemented in your classroom. Be sure to identify the two strategies by name and describe how they could be used to address the needs of a student with a disability. - The first strategy that I use with students in my classroom is task cards and graphic organizers (first, then, last). Both of these strategies really help the communication aspect of teaching and setting expectations.
  • Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to describe the specific technology and how it assisted the student with a disability - I have used technology in the form of an IPAD to help some of my students who are non verbal so we can effectively communicate.

Every classroom in my school has a smart board. I have used the video camera feature of the smart board to visually record students performing songs with hand motions. Playing back the videos has proved to be both entertaining and beneficial as a self evaluation tool for all the students, especially those who are hearing impaired. Observing and listening to student responses helps me to determine what adjustments can be made to my instructional approach without embarrassing any individual student.
