Students With Disabilities

I have numerous students with various disabilities in my classes. SH is a student with various disabilities, but most are emotional due to past trauma. This student is also ADHD. I've found that allowing this student to sit at the bar alone to work is very efficient. I also allow this student to stand while working. This student also gets paranoid a lot so I constantly reassure him that no one is talking about him. I've managed to keep him in the classroom for most class periods. He typically walks out of every class, but modifying lessons to keep him interested is also a big help. |

I have a class that is half Art 1 inclusion students and the other half are my Art 3 advanced students. I've found that using technology to help with assignments is awesome. I've taught my art three students to use technology to communicate with their Art 1 student. I've also found that my lower functioning students in that class can complete similar tasks using technology and still get a good grasp on the concepts. I'm always using graphic organizers and worksheets. My higher functioning students complete their color wheels using paint or other media. My lower functioning students can complete the same lesson mixing playdough and/or smashing it onto their color wheels. |

Assessment of Learning

I always scaffold assessments in my classroom for each student. I typically do a preliminary artwork to gauge a student's skill level at the beginning of the year. I then base my grading on improvement or growth from the intial artwork. When I am grading a summative test, I always allow my students to ask for clarification and allow them to retake the test as many times as they need to until they pass it. I've found in doing this, my students are less panicked and typically do better on the first round because they don't have to be panicked about having a failing grade. |
