Students with Disabilities

I recall a student with emotional/behavioral disabilities who easily lost focus, had difficulty staying on task, and struggled with self-regulating their movements. This student was much more successful with choice-based art instruction where they had the opportunity to select their own materials and physically move among several different art technique stations. This approach allowed them, and all the other students, to take more ownership of their creative work and gave an opportunity to switch their focus from time to time which increased engagement and meaningful learning.

  • Task cards work well when placed at each station to keep all students on track. They allow for students who work at different paces to self-regulate and remind themselves of the necessary steps without asking. The graphic organizer of Venn diagrams is a great tool to compare/contrast two or more works of art. This can be extended to compare and contrast works of art created by the students. It's a great way to visually categorize information and it's similar to the color wheel which they already understand.
  • iPads allow all students, especially students with a visual impairment, the ability to closely examine works of art gives. By zooming in, they can see much more detail and they have control over which sections of the works they'd like to explore.

For all students but especially students who struggle with verbalizing their answers, I provide cards related to key concepts such as elements and principles of art. They can share their art responses with me using those cards to describe what types of patterns, lines, colors, and forms they're seeing in the artwork.
