Students with Disabilities

For the past 3 years, I have had a student who is EBD. In the beginning, he would get extremely frustrated with the most basic tasks and as a reaction would make the art room an unsafe space. As I formed connections with the student and worked with all stakeholders in his accommodations process he began to be able to work through those outbursts and actually create. I put him at a special desk up beside me. He sometimes would be my assistant and get me materials for demonstrations. He had a student buddy that they could work together, or if he was struggling the student could assist (but not do it for him). This has boosted his confidence level and eliminated some of his old tendencies. He still has moments, and we are continuously reevaluating and changing strategies in order for him to be successful in the art room. |

Assessment of Learning

I use multiple informal assessments throughout the year. Such as observation, individual questions, and exit tickets to name a few. This way I can assess their understanding. Sometimes students can self-correct, but for those needing additional guidance, I give them a peer buddy or additional time in order to improve upon the skill or product. I use these different assessments to determine content knowledge and individual learning. |

In my IVE classes, I use Learning Centers, I set up various centers such as free draw, iPads (for certain students), magnatiles/blocks, and one on one/ small instruction. I have found this to work best to achieve our project goals, while also allowing time for students to choose and create in their own individual ways. I have also found that Peer Partners works wonderfully in the art room. I usually pair a skilled individual with a peer that often needs a little more assistance. I have them collaborate and work together to achieve the end goal.
I use technology in a variety of ways. One example: I have a visually impaired student, I provide him with an iPad with an image that he can enlarge and observe more closely. I also have videos of processes we are using that he can start and stop at his own pace. |
