Students with Disabilities

I've had a student in band the last few years who is hard of hearing. The biggest issue with that is making sure I can get his attention and for me, just remembering he is hard of hearing so that I can adjust. This student also has some developmental delays but has generally done well in band and gets along with the other percussionists. His favorite instrument is bass drum so we try to get him on there whenever possible. |

I love the idea of "cubing" as a way to go deeper into a piece of music we're learning. I don't often ask any of my students to research or learn about the composer so this would be a great activity- and not a worksheet or completely open ended assignment. I also think doing more cooperative learning in small groups- whether it's working on a small ensemble piece or improving a band piece- would be a good strategy for all my students not just those with disabilities. |

Assessment of Learning

I have a student with hearing loss and some cognitive impairments. He does really well when we're playing together, but doesn't focus well on individual practice or assignments. I've found the best way to adapt his assessment is to have him play in a group. I keep the group small so I can still hear him, but he doesn't have to play by himself or practice alone. |
