Students With Disabilities

I had a student who is blind in my Technical Theatre Design and Production class. She was very enthusiastic and always willing to help. She was well aware of what assisting tools she had access to. She always came to class with a special magnifying instrument that allowed her to see things up close. She loved being hands on with materials and tools and made sure to keep herself safe and out of harms way when we were using heavier machinery. She loved painting sets and helping with costume design. She has no learning disabilities. On the contrary, she was a gifted student who never lets her blindness get in the way of her academic success. She excels in all core classes and in any elective she is required to take. She makes the adjustments before I can even offer them to her. I had a great time with that student in my class. |

I've had students use graphic organizers and Cornell Notes. I found that the graphic organizer is a great tool in allowing students with disabilities to reach higher levels of understanding. I would often allow them to use a Venn-Diagram to understand the similarities and differences in a staged version of a show and a filmed version of the same show (ie- Shrek, Into the Woods, etc.). On the contrary, when required to use Cornell Notes in the first school I taught in, I found students with disabilities struggle. They were not as keen on that organized form of note taking. Maybe because they were not good note takers? Maybe because it made it feel like more work than the requirements? |

I have allowed students with severe social disabilities anxiety to view professionally recorded live performances instead of attending a live show. While it is essential that students attend a live production and experience live theatre, I understand that it may not be the best environment for everyone and must be accommodating. Each student must complete an Evaluation of a Live Performance for their midterm and final on a show they attended during that semester. For those students previously mentioned, I will allow them to watch a recorded play or musical so they may be more focused on the show and not the idea of being in a room with hundred of other people around them. |
