I have a student on the spectrum who came in as a 9th grader with no IEP and the first day of school was found sitting on the roof of the school of his medication. He has since proven to be quite the handful both in class and out for the administration. He is into pot and lacks a filter, speaks openly about gay sex and says he loves theater but is off-task daily in class when he is at school. I am doing my best to set him up with interventions at school with the school counselor and psychologist. He has even vandalized the school. This kid needs help fast! The best I've done thus far to keep him in check for me is make him my assistant and give him some responsibilities - which he seems to respond well too. |

I have a unit I like to do with my musical theatre class and my tech theatre class called, "The Soundtrack of my Life". The students choose 5 (appropriate) songs that they feel highlights 2 times of happiness , 2 times of sadness and a favorite artist song that they share with the class. I find that this lesson engages all learners across the spectrum and also creates a connection within the classroom fostering trust and friendship. The music is played on youTube on my Smart Board but is only lyrics, no videos. The student provides a background for the song choice with their story then plays the best 45 seconds of each song. It takes a week to get through everyone but its so worth it! |

I have adapted lessons for an ADHD student by allowing them to take extra time to complete his work and to also explore an assignment artistically for a Publicity Design assignment, he really enjoyed creating a show poster for "Sweeney Todd" but needed more time to complete the written elements like creating the Press Release and Programs. His presentation and supporting statements for his creative decisions were outstanding and he was really engaged! |
