Students with Disabilities

I currently have a first grade student who has a physical and visual impairment. He loves coming to music, is always engaged, and is always willing to participate. He is in a wheel chair with a detachable tray that is removed whenever we do activities where we are moving. I move around with him and he loves participating in our guided movement activities. He uses his tray to place any instruments or writing tools if we are writing or drawing anything in music class. His classmates do a great job including him and seeing beyond his impairments. His joyful spirit puts a smile on my face and seeing his response to music and successfully completing assessments is definitely a worthwhile teaching experience!

Tools and Strategies

Two strategies that could be implemented in my classroom to address a student with disability needs are: graphic organizers and letter strategy. With graphic organizers it scaffolds instruction and helps with independent practice. In specific I could use venn diagrams to assess the student and provide feedback to the students on a one-to-one basis, and provide time needed for each individual student. Since I see my students so infrequently the letter strategy is another strategy I can implement. The letter strategy provides the students to remember important information with important words in acrostics. These strategies are very adequate and helpful in the elementary setting and can be specific for the needs of all students in the music classroom.

Assessment of Learning

Since I have all students ranging from grades between K-5 I give my students a variety of adaptive assessments. I have successfully used exit cards on post-it notes and the students enjoy the brevity of the assessment and the quick feedback. This type of assessment has no more than 5 questions and the students correct their own card. I also use response cards for all grade levels and the students enjoy using whiteboards and the students can quickly respond and are patient for those students that need some more time. With the response cards I can quickly assess the students and those students who respond quickly I can provide them quick feedback while the other students are writing their response. Using adaptive assessments aids with evaluating and grading fairly, and providing the students with feedback that will enhance their learning.
