Students With Disabilities

I have a student with Aspergers who thinks very highly of himself. He is a decent actor but not the quality he claims to be. He doesn't work well in groups, not because of social insecurities but because of his sheer arrogance. His fellow group members don't like working with him due to his diva behavior. He is always constantly trying to take over the group and be the sole leader when teamwork is the goal. When his group members or I calmly remind him of this, he throws a temper tantrum, storms out, cools off, comes back in, and slowly tries to gain control back in the group in what he thinks is sneaky and strategic. I am constantly struggling to teach him teamwork and collaboration even with texts or performances pieces he likes. I am really only successful if he is given his way. |

Choose One(1):
- Option 1: Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
- I have students with multiple conditions that keep them from physically coming to school, sometimes months at time but their parents refuse to enroll in home school or home/hospital bound. For these students, we really on video recording and email correspondence. I send the directions to the parent, the child video records their performance, and they email it to me for grading.

Choose One(1):- Option 2: Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
- I have a student with Aspergers whose IEP gives permission for him to type and email his written work on a laptop. To be honest, this accommodation has made him slower to turn things in because it has proven to be more of a distraction than simple pen and paper. I allow it because he also gets extended time, but he is usually about 5-7 weeks late turning in an assignment, with is well past his extended time allowance. I will be requesting reevaluation in regards to these accommodations. I personally feel that he is taking advantage of a system that was made to benefit him.
