Students With Disabilities

I have a student who is developmentally delayed, and has a range of health issues. She requires a tracheostomy tube and communicates through sign language. She comes to school for short periods of the day, as her health allows, and usually makes it to my art class. The students in her class have learned some basic sign language, so that they can communicate with her, and I have made an effort to learn content specific ASL. I also have some crayons and paintbrushes with larger handles, which she finds much easier to handle. |

1. Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to describe the specific technology and how it assisted the student with a disability.
I have one student who has Autism. When the classroom environment gets to be too much for her, I have several art games and repetitive "fidget games" on the ipad that help to soothe her until she is ready to rejoin the class. I have also found that certain types of music, played over the sound system, help to calm the entire class, which is a more suitable environment for all of us. |

1. Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
For most of my intermediate elementary students, I ask them to write a few sentences about how their completed project relates to the learning goal being taught. In order to allow one of my developmentally delayed students to be able to participate, I have asked him to verbally respond and have even had him partner with another student to record his responses. |
