I have a little girl in the 8th grade in a wheelchair. We built a ramp for her in my classroom so she could get on and off the stage without assistance. We also amend the choreography for her as we need to. She went to state festival with us last year, in the large group musical number. She also has a processing disorder, and that makes it hard for her to learn her line. She does a fabulous job with improv though, and got a superior at district festival. When I cast her in shows, I give her short and sweet cameo roles where she can really shine.

  • Option 2: Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

I have used voice recorders to help kids learn lines. I will record their lines, or their music on my phone, and then upload the tracks to Edsby. The kids can use them to help learn the piece. With one student in particular, she has a processing disorder and is a level 1 reader. For her, reading the words will not do any good. if she hears them over and over, she will pick up the lines. She is really good a memorizing song lyrics in this way.

Option 1: Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

I did a Shakespeare Monologue unit last year. I had a girl with a processing disorder who cannot memorize lines. I gave her a very short monologue, and allowed her to call for line as often as she needed to. She was also allowed to use her monologue copy to practice, long after all the others had to be off book. I wanted to check her for understanding, not just memorization.
