I had a student several years ago who was identified as having Asperger's syndrome. This student was a wonderful drama student and was particularly good on stage. Memorization was never a problem for this student. However, there were times my student needed extra time with written assignments. I often allowed him to take a reflection we did in class home to finish or allowed several days to work on a written assessment. This never disrupted my classroom or assessments in any way and was easy to do for this student. I have also had a student with a hearing disability. Accommodations for this student included using a microphone for amplified speaking from the teacher. We used the microphone for a few days in my class and found that due to my projection and diction the microphone was more of a hindrance than a help. Instruction was too loud for my student if we used the provided microphone, so we simply had a physical signal to let me know if I needed to repeat or speak louder for my student to understand the instructions. |

In the drama classroom we already use many of these strategies to assist in learning. We start the year with a Bubble map about creativity to assist the students in advanced drama to examine their own steps in the creative process. We use story maps to analyse play structure; Venn Diagrams to compare time periods in history, and bubble maps to create characters. I will definitely use the ideas on note taking for Tech theatre. My students do a lot of Peer Partnering in activities and in specific types of learning. I am happy to see that I have already been doing many of the things that will assist all of my students to lean. |

I have a student that has dyslexia. Often times cold readings of scripts are very difficult. Learning lines in general are very difficult. This student requires more time during testing and various assignments/assessments that include comprehension, reading to oneself and reciting lines. It is easy to allow this student to have extra time as it is needed. Often more time is given to run lines with peers and rehearse scenes. This student works hard to learn what is needed to perform an excellent scene and often doesn't want to use the accommodations she has on her plan, but it is good to know the plan is there when the student does need the extra time. |
