Students with Disabilities

I have had a student with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities for two years now. When they were in 2nd Grade, this student would have erratic outbursts, screaming, throwing objects, threatening others around them, and their outbursts were usually caused by not getting to do what they wanted to do that day. Throughout the year, I started learning what strategies would calm them down. I would always make sure to give them their own time with me during the project, they were allowed to leave their seat to ask me a question if I wasn't next to them, and they were the only one allowed to take their project home immediately (if it was dry). I also would make this student a helper if he participated in the lesson and finished. This past year, this student has improved dramatically, to the point where I was able to hang their artwork in the hallway for a month! (Though we still struggle with taking things home immediately). They even come in early some days to work on the project that was assigned. I am looking forward to having this student through their elementary career and seeing all the strides they make throughout their time in my class. |

1. Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
I do have a student with multiple disabilities (non verbal and physical). I made sure to put him at a table that is easy to access and close to the projector, so he can see any powerpoint/videos we are using to help with our lesson. Also, I have placed him with other students that can help with peer instruction when I cannot assist him. For assessment on his projects, I look to see if he has used any of the materials to make any kind of marks on his paper. If he needs a circle for the project, I hold the tracer and let him trace around the best of his ability. Since he has limited mobility, making colorful marks on his paper is a great accomplishment for him, and I do accept that for his art projects. edited by Sahmiah Eacret on 7/6/2018 |

2. Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
I have recently received a smartboard in my Art Room. I am looking forward to using this technology to help with students that are ADHD and continue to loose focus on the task at hand or finish early. To help them focus on our project, I plan on using powerpoints, videos, and multiple visuals that will catch their eye. If they happen to finish early, I know that they have specific art review games they can play with the smartboard that will correlate to what our project is on and help them deepen their understanding. |
