Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA):Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act, and it was signed into law on December 10, 2015 amending the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. The state of Florida is currently completing the plan for submission to the U.S. Department of Education by September 18, 2018. The state plan was first submitted for initial public comment in the summer of 2016. The plan was revised and again was posted for public comment from June 30 to July 31, 2017. FMEA and FAEA on both occasions submitted comments focusing on the importance that arts education be included as part of the plan for a well-rounded education.
The implementation of ESSA will be something that we will want to observe and act as necessary for arts education. The key here is that the arts are part of a well-rounded education that is so explicitly listed in the Act.
Florida Legislature:The Florida 2018 Legislative Session will be January 9 - March 9. FMEA's and FAEA's Advocacy Committees will continue to provide updates on bills that are proposed by Florida’s legislators.
As HB 7069 passed and signed by the Governor is currently being reviewed for implementation by the Florida Department of Education, we will keep you informed with updates.
